Hungry yet Developed!

'I earn Rs 2,500/- per month and spend almost all of it on two meals a day.', said Seema Kumari, a resident of NATIONAL CAPITAL TERRITORY OF DELHI. Its the same place where our elected representative recently had food @ Rs 7, 721/- per person!

We claim to be developing, but have we ever tried to analyse the real meaning of development? A country which can not provide adequate food to its citizens, should be ashamed of talking about various Communication satellites, skyscrapers, missiles, etc. The first and foremost priority of the elected representatives should be to provide for adequate food grains to the common man. Even if we are able to save people from enemy's attack, he would die of hunger so whats the use of such development? Such so called development should better be called as the path we are preparing towards self-destruction. I would consider myself to be fortunate if I die in an enemy's attack rather than die of hunger!

Public Distribution Supply of various grains comes to the PDS Shop and is sold out in market on the very next day and the common man always gets the shop closed due to it being out of stock! This is the story of every Ration Shop almost across India (I can only say about Delhi). And this is because of lack of awareness among the common man.

During our Comprehensive Slum Development Project, we came across this issue of people not getting ration even when they possess a valid Ration Card. Others were getting ration lesser than what they are entitled for. I decided to file an RTI and seek details of this particular Ration Shop. The shop was found closed when we reached for the inspection of the shop records under RTI Act, 2005. The person concerned sat in his Real Estate Bussiness office just next to the Ration Shop! Anyhow. On Monday, 1st October 2012 this PDS Shop guy will be presenting all records for last 6 months in Circle Office for our inspection.

The big question remains, what kind of development is this? Khana chori ho rha hai to aur kya ummeed rakh sakte hain? Choice is yours Food Grains or Missiles! Another important thing, are we in dearth of food grains or is it being stolen?

  1. I agree with this imbalance in politico system where at one hand we are doing well and on other hand we are completely helpless. It is a situation where we can not bring down developments of other dept rather we need to work towards the proper functioning of other dept. No doubt, Govt is providing all help but not in a proper way. They also need to ensure that things/policies are implemented properly and common man's life is not stuck due to mismanagement. We need to spread awareness among people about what is wrong and what is right/rules. There are more than 100 NGOs fighting for people's right in NCT itself but they are also not able to bring that smoothness functioning of public sectors. So it can not be expected from these 750 MPs to scrutinize the system. There are bad MPs and good MPs as well. Overall system will change only when each one of us will have guts to fight for every small faults/wrong doings. Problem is that officers do not act until unless one approaches to them with a complain. No action is taken against the culprit and he/she is left with a warning. Now one can't run behind every officer with a complain in their hand. Because of this most people do not complain about the loophole/fault/inefficiency and look for a compromise. Moreover if a common man wishes to bring about the problem, he/she is not aware how and where to put the problem. Govt must bring some policy/scheme/reform to make every service fully interactive and certain amount of fine should also be levied on the culprit.
